Vernon Parish is gearing up to celebrate Mayfest 2008! This year’s annual celebration of Art promises to be the best ever! Scheduled for May 2nd - 4th, this 3-day festival will take place in downtown Leesville, the heart of the Leesville Historic District. Food, fun, arts & crafts, demonstrations, make & take booths, exhibits & displays….combine all this with great entertainment, and you’ve got Mayfest.

We'll have local delicacies from civic groups and local organizations, including the annual Lion’s Club benefit Pancake Breakfast Saturday morning. Come enjoy funnel cakes, bratwurst dinners, BBQ, Alligator on a Stick, Snow Cones, etc.

Artisans from the Louisiana Crafts Guild will be joining us this year, to display and demonstrate their talents. We’ll have glass artisans, woodworkers, mixed media artists, and others. Children of all ages can participate in a variety of hands-on, creative, play and make art projects. Emma Hughes will be on hand to demonstrate her traditional hand woven baskets, Annie Hendrix and Luann Duhon both work in clay pottery, Miles Peterson is an exceptional wood artist, Liz Brazelton works with mosaics, and Ellen Caillouet, a superb glass artist will be demonstrating and working with the kid’s area.

Many vendors set up booths in the historic district. We’ll have wood crafters, candle-makers, artists, glass workers, metal artisans, face painters, and many more. The Verbeau African Violet club will be showing and selling beautiful violets, don’t miss this chance to get a healthy plant. One of the local gardening groups will have a wide variety of plants to choose from. You’ll have a chance to find the perfect Mother’s Day gift - you’ll see lot’s of great ideas as you stroll along the vendor area.

An added attraction this year - two groups of car enthusiasts will be on hand through-out the weekend showing a number of restored classic automobiles, muscle cars, and even motorcycles. The Cenla Antique Auto Club out of Alexandria, and the La Slow Rollers of Vernon and Beauregard Parish will both be here. If you like cars, come check these out!

Entertainment this year will include concerts by Wayne Toups and Zydecajun, Tab Benoit, Jo-El Sonnier, Trout Fishing in America, Gypsy La Rose, Laurel and the Edge, Na Na Sha, and others. All these concerts are free, so come join the fun!

Mayfest is the major fundraiser for each season of Arts performances sponsored by the Vernon Arts Council. Mayfest is also sponsored in part by a Grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, administered by the Arts Council of Central Louisiana, the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation, and Tourism, and the Vernon Parish Tourism Commission.
