Artist Statement:
I grew up painting graffiti in the densely wooded creek channels and train yards of the South. Unlike
graffiti writers growing up in cities like Los Angeles and New York City, trail blazing through the
woods, running into hunters and dead animals seemed more familiar than bustling crowds of people
and high rise buildings; I paint my experience during those times. Based on the colors and subject
matter I acquired during those years; I aim to disassociate as well as educate the viewer’s idea of graffiti
and its culture. I put minimal focus toward the glossy complex graffiti lettering but target more of my focus
on the feeling of the surroundings, whether that be the rust on the boxcars or the natural environment. I
find that the graffiti/act of painting graffiti for me is just a metaphor for nature's work in progress; once
the subject matter is finished it is inevitably on its course to corrosion or some other form of artificial
decay. I find that my fascination with my subject matter is not of just its engineering, but its process to
be maintained and its course to ruin.
