artist statement:
I am really looking forward to working with Gallery One Ellleven. I have felt the
effects of not creating art for a long time now. Life seemed to get in the way of
my creating. So you can imagine my excitement of being a part of something I feel
is very needed in Leesville. First let me start with a little bit about myself. My
name is Tanya Cormier Lewis. I am from Lafayette, Louisiana. I graduated from the
University of Southwestern Louisiana with a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts. I am a
Fine Art Photographer. I also do a little of what I call digital painting. I moved
here 6 years ago when I married Mike Lewis from Baton Rouge. His family is from
Vernon Parish which is what brought us here. I work for the United States Postal
Service. I haven't created any fine art in over 6 years.
I've been asked what/who inspires me to do what I do. As I mentioned before, many
things inspire me; music, books, movies or just something I see in everyday life. It
can be a line in a song or book and my mind wraps around it and I think on it and
do research to create the images I think would be interesting not only for myself
but for the viewer.
background:
I do have my degree in fine arts with a concentration in photography and I also
did museum studies as special studies...I worked one on one with the USL gallery
director Bryan Lafaye. I did acquisitions, hosted exhibit openings and helped
hang shows. I was also the gallery's exhibition photographer. I photographed
exhibits for their records. I also worked as a custom photo printer at Spectrum
Arts in Lafayette while attending college. I have printed photos for Phillip Gould
and several other famous Louisiana photographers. I assisted in hanging an exhibit
for Dennis Paul Williams at Jazz Fest in New Orleans in the 90's. I have had art
in juried competitions and once did a writer/artist collaboration which was shown
during Festival D' International in Lafayette. I was the photo editor of USL's
yearbook, 'L'Acadian' and while there I was able to shoot several big venue
concerts. From that, a local band in Lafayette hired me to shoot their CD cover.
I am now co-owner of T and M Photography. We do all kinds of photography as well
as digital restoration.
Now with all that being said....I moved up here and basically quit creating fine
art so when I got the chance to become a part of something I love and that I feel
is very much in need in Leesville I jumped at the chance. With all the exciting
things going on with the gallery it gives me a reason to make the time to create
my art and in doing so I feel alive again. Not only will it get me back where
I belong in my head but it will also soothe my soul to know I am finally doing
something with my degree. I have challenged myself to create a series of fine art
photos to help bring something I started way back before I moved here to maturation
and move on to becoming very active in my art life and the gallery. I hope this
makes sense to you, it is hard for me to describe how I ache to become involved
in art again. The old saying is true....an artist's soul dies a slow death when
they are not creating.
